Acute Illness

"Do I need antibiotics?"

This is the most common question I have to answer in primary care. Most acute illnesses are viral, meaning there is no cure other than time. Our bodies are naturally really good at healing. But when bacteria are involved, only that is when antibiotics become necessary.

Common Cold & Other Viruses

Here are some general recommendations:

Examples

  • Influenza

  • COVID

  • RSV

  • Adenovirus

  • Parainfluenza virus (croup)

Supportive care

  • Hydration

  • Rest

  • Stay away from others and wash hands frequently!

  • Saline nasal sprays and rinses

Over the counter medication

  • Nasal steroid sprays for post nasal drip and congestion

  • Guaifenesin (expectorant) for congestion

  • Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant)

  • Decongestants for sinus pain

COVID

Some people are more at risk for complications of COVID than others and may benefit from prescription treatment.
